Most polluted city in Russia in 2015 was Chita, capital of the TransBaikal region, according to agency Rosstat, the Federal State Statistics Service. On 34 occasions it exceeded the maximum allowable concentration of benzopyrene, and 21 times transgressed the legal limit for suspended solids.

In second place was Ulan-Ude, capital of the Republic of Buryatia, which on  24 times exceeded permitted  benzopyrene levels. In fourth place was Beloyarsky, in western Siberia's Khanty-Mansi autonomous region, which transgressed in formaldehyde pollution.

The major industrial city of Krasnoyarsk took the ninth place. Twice in 2015, the concentration of hydrogen chloride was exceeded by 13 times.

Key industrial centres in the Urals were also blackspots for pollution. Magnitogorsk, Perm, Ufa, Nizhniy Tagil, Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg were all in the top ten list of worst polluted cities.

Norilsk - an Arctic city long seen as having a serious pollution problem - was not on the 2015 list.

Thank you for monitoring key air quality parameters and raising awareness of non-compliance issues. With this knowledge in hand, I hope steps are being taken to address air, water and soil quality issues all across Siberia. We struggle as well in the United States to hold polluters, and all associated with that pollution, accountable. Siberia has a great opportunity to lead the world by a positive example.
