Ilya Tsvetkov, 35, was stranded after reaching the top of 4,750 metre Klyuchevskaya Sopka in Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula. Volcanic activity and atrocities weather combined to prevent several rescue attempts from reaching the marooned mountaineer.

Father-of-five Tsvetkov was hit by altitude sickness after reaching the crater which was spewing extreme toxic gas and vapour emissions.

His fellow climber descended to raise the alarm but there was an agonising delay in reaching him due to atrocious conditions.

A team arrived from his native Vladivostok to try and save him.

'We very much wanted to believe in a miracle,' they said in a message.

'Sadly there are no miracles, and Ilya has passed away.'

A picture showed his body being brought down the snow-covered slopes of the volcano.

@jaker.... selfish because now he leaves 5, yes 5, fatherless children behind, knowing the risk beforehand. If you don't understand that, then you should have an emotional review conducted by a specialist and never have children yourself.

Why was he selfish? These climbers are adventurous...they challenge themselves to great heights. Sometimes things go wrong and the weather turns & awful things like this happens. But don't forget he had a team that went with him. I salute his & their bravery & the bravery of the other friends who turned up there to try & save him alas with no luck, but at least they tried & found his body to bring back to his family to be buried with dignity. May his soul rest in peace.

Sad, but selfish of him. Now he leaves 5 children fatherless. It doesn't mention about his wife or if he was married or not. Must have known about the risks involved. RIP.
