The tiger, one of only 600 living in the wild, was killed close to the road from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok in Russian Far East.

The poachers, unnamed and without their ages reported, were detained by border control FSB operatives three days ago in Khabarovsk as they attempted to sell the derivatives of the Red Book animal. Checks are ongoing as to who ordered the poaching.

Amur tiger derivatives are a highly sought item in Chinese traditional medicine as they are believed to have power to heal multiple illnesses.

There are only around 600 Amur tigers living in the wild in their natural habitat in eastern Russia, close to the Chinese border, with loss of every animal causing serious damage to the population.

The Amur tiger is the world’s largest cat, it came close to extinction after the collapse of the USSR due to poaching.

The population has been gradually recovering in recent years due to state-supported protection programs.

Eight years is too light of a sentence, threaten them with castration or death and I bet the poaching falls to zero % instead of killing a beautiful endangered animal, kill the piece of garbage to was doing it.

Beautifully written comment Chad Hammond...The greatest tragedy of all; is that mankind will not become extinct before our magestic, exquisite, pure and noble four legged brothers...

Looking into the face, eyes and soul of that close up tiger caption; I do not know what type of two legged, evil criminal can murder and mutilate such noble beauty...Who ever says what differs a human to an animal is the conscience is wrong. It's humanity who have lost or sold their soul and conscience not the animal kingdom...

Hoping the poachers get all 8 years. Poaching of any animal is disgusting. Poaching of endangered species, especially apex predators, destroys biodiversity and the symbiotic relationships within the animal kingdom. There appears to be inconsistent information on the current Amur Tiger count along the Russian Chinese border and up into Korea, and whether its population is healthy or endangered, but if it's on the lower end of the estimate, around only 50 left, the Amur will become extinct about the same time as the Polar Bear, early next century, due to the dwindling ice cap, and that would just be really sad, that the 20th Century generations of humans oversaw the ultimate extinction of two of nature's most fantastic beasts.
