The Krasnoyarsk-based artist’s new work is called ‘Oncology of an Embryo’, and is a part of his Khim Punk Project which highlights the ways humans try to adjust to modern reality.

He started the project in 2016 and said that he feels it being ‘more relevant than ever’ today.

‘My project is about aesthetics of chemical, nuclear and other industries,’ he said.

'It is a narrative about modern reality and how to adjust to it.

‘Since this reality is not always cosy and comfortable, it needs to be nicely shaped up.

‘As an artist I am responsible for beauty, and my idea is that if we have to die let’s do it beautifully.’

There were three babies born with congenital cancer in Krasnoyarsk region in 2019, a figure which Russian doctors expect to grow with development of technologies leading to better diagnosis.

The statistics are not unique to industrial Krasnoyarsk region, with these cases detected all around Russia, said children’s oncologist Maksim Rykov.

'These are not isolated cases. Statistics from 2007 to 2017 show an increase of congenital cancer by 13%.

‘It’s good in that it means that cancer gets better detected.’

Rykov, associate professor of the Oncology Department of Moscow’s Sechenov Medical University, was speaking to Krasnoyarsk TVK TV.

A combination of lifestyle, genetic, hereditary and ecological factors that can cause congenital cancer.

‘We don’t know the significance of each of these factors yet’, Rykov explained, adding that he sees a link between the type of lifestyle and risk of developing cancer.

‘Poor population will never be able to afford the right kind of lifestyle as it is expensive. We need to increase literacy and standards of living so that people can afford healthy lifestyle’, he added.
